Best Lawn Care Tools for First Time Home Buyers

Best Lawn Care Tools for First Time Home Buyers

For new homeowners stepping into the world of lawn care, investing in essential tools is a crucial first step to ensure a lush, well-maintained yard. A reliable lawnmower is at the top of the list, as it will be your primary tool for keeping the grass at a manageable height. Depending on the size of your yard, you may choose between a push mower, which is more suitable for smaller lawns, or a self-propelled or riding mower for larger areas. Additionally, a string trimmer (or weed eater) is invaluable for reaching areas that the lawnmower cannot access, such as around trees, garden beds, and fences. Having these two basics ensures that your lawn’s main maintenance needs are met efficiently and effectively.

In addition to mowing equipment, a few other tools will help keep your yard tidy and healthy. A leaf rake is essential for clearing leaves and debris, which can smother grass and promote fungal diseases if left to accumulate. For maintaining your lawn’s edges, an edger can create clean and professional-looking borders along driveways and sidewalks. A garden hose and sprinkler or irrigation system are necessary for keeping your lawn hydrated, especially during dry spells. Finally, consider investing in hand tools like pruning shears for trimming shrubs and a spade or shovel for planting and soil aeration. With these tools in your arsenal, you'll be well-equipped to create a vibrant and inviting outdoor space.

I would recommend a gas motor for first time lawn mower buyers. Cheaper electric mowers have a tendency to not have enough battery to get the job done. I'm including two here depending on your budger.

1. Toro Recycler 21 in. 140 cc Gas Lawn Mower

Toro's are extremely reliable, and come with everything you need to start cutting your grass. This design is great for homeowners seeking a lawn mower with a high-quality, user-friendly design. Best of all, no oil changes for the life of the engine.

You can find them at your local Ace Hardware for about $369 at the time this article was published.

2. Honda HRX Self-Propelled Lawn Mower with Select Drive, 200cc Honda GVC200 Engine, 21in. Deck

The Honda is going to be a bit more expensive but it's just an overall upgrade. Performance will be better and these Honda Lawn Mowers are solid! It's hard to actually break them.

When it comes to other tools to keep your yard clean and tidy, please consider getting a leaf blower. They will get rid of all the build up of debris and leaves and help keep your yard looking pristine. There are a few different routes you can go here. If you want something powerful and efficient think about getting battery powered leaf blowers from trusted brands like Milwaukee and Dewalt where you can use batteries you may already have for other tools. You can also choose a gas powered unit. These are going to be reliable and traditionally more powerful than battery powered units but always has the caveat of the noise that it comes with. Last option to consider is cord powered leaf blowers. If you don't need to be free roaming and can reach all the necessary areas with an extension cord, consider one of the corded units below, they're going to be substantially cheaper then the battery powered and gas powered blowers but you have to be prepared to manage the extension cord.

Corded Leaf Blowers

I've owned the Craftsman 450-CFM and it's more than enough power and a very enticing price tag. But honestly, it is annoying to always have the extension cord ran as well as the cord becoming detached in the middle of blowing. Overall I would recommend to shell out a few extra bucks and get battery powered or gas. You should be purchasing this product for a minimum of five years of use, hopefully upwards of ten.
